(Motorola Astro Saber. Shown is Astro 3. And so begins the birth of the digital radio age and the horrors and expense it will bring. 255 channels, P25 capable, Astro Digital Mode, DES-XL encryption, mdc-1200 or singletone repeater access, OTAR, and the only more recent radio to incorporate the old motorola modat (5 tone) format. First portable radio capable of decoding mdc-1200 on screen. 1992 to 2004 (Motorola killed it in 2002) and so ends the saber age with much regret by NYPD. approx. cost new 4500.00 and only available to gov agencies direct)

( The Astro Saber is a totally different radio internally than the original Saber. In my opinion the only thing they share is that they are similar in size and shape and uses the same battery, battery charger, antenna and speaker-mic. It will do both wideband and narrowband analog on a per-channel basis plus added digital capability including multiple encryption keys (Option H869), OTACR (Over The Air Channel Reassignment) and OTACS (Over The Air Channel Steering)

The Saber series is very ham-friendly. The Saber II and III have handy features such as MPL (Multiple PL select), nuisance delete - the temporary deletion of a busy channel from the scan list (a feature I think all radios should have since it is so handy), and many more!

Sabers that do features like scan do so via cumbersome menus, while Systems Sabers do it via direct button presses. Astro Sabers, unlike Systems Sabers, will remember scan state through a channel change. Systems Sabers only allow one MDC ID per radio, while Astro Sabers allow you to enable multiple MDC "systems" and select which system goes with which channel. This feature is nice if you have, for example, both Police and the Fire channels in your radio but different MDC IDs. )

(The Astro Saber is a great radio, & if upgrading from a regular Saber, most accessories will work. I give this radio a 10. GARY N4KVE )

(All Astro Sabers must be programed with a computer using RSS, or newer CPS. While I own these newer radios, in my opinion they don't work better than the Astro Saber. They were made from 1993-2003 give or take a year. GARY N4KVE )
